What is AmeriCorps Seniors?

AmeriCorps Seniors is Kent County’s hub for connecting schools and non-profits to the wisdom, experience and enthusiasm of volunteers 55 and older. Through three unique programs, we help tap into the capacity of volunteers to expand partner organizations’ ability to address community needs.

Who can serve?

Any individual 55+ who has the time and desire to give back to their community.

How do I serve?

You choose how you’d like give back. Between the three programs, volunteer opportunities are available to accommodate schedules, location preferences and mobility restrictions. You can serve daily, weekly, monthly or as-needed. How you serve depends on your own interests and availability.

What are the benefits?

In addition to personal assistance connecting to a service opportunity you are passionate about, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers also receive access to additional member-exclusive benefits. These include supplemental insurance, training, transportation resources, events and more! Benefits may vary by program and funding availability.

Foster Grandparents
Shape a child’s life as a mentor or tutor. Help students develop literacy and math skills and be a positive adult role model. Volunteers serve 20 hours a week in a local school or daycare classroom.
In addition to the other AmeriCorps benefits, the Foster Grandparent program offers modest stipends to income eligible volunteers to help offset the costs of volunteering.
RSVP
Use your skills and abilities in a volunteer role that aligns with your interests while supporting Priority Focus Areas such as: Economic Opportunity, Healthy Futures and K-12 Success. Volunteers serve at organizations across Kent County or remotely. Flexible schedules, remote service and one-time opportunities are available.
Senior Companions
Provide assistance and friendship to older adults and provide respite for family caregivers. Volunteers serve 20 hours a week in a local senior living community or in-home placements.
In addition to the other AmeriCorps benefits, the Senior Companions program offers modest stipends to income eligible volunteers to help offset the costs of volunteering.
What support does a Senior Companion offer?
A Senior Companion is a 55+ volunteer who regularly visits another older adult to provide companionship, friendship, and emotional support. They might chat, share a meal, take a walk, play games, or help with running errands. The goal is to help older adults feel more connected and reduce loneliness. For seniors who live with family caregivers, a Senior Companion can give those caregivers a much-needed break, allowing them to rest or attend to other tasks knowing their loved one is in good company. Refer a senior for a companion here.
